  1. Adventure Camp: Art of Gardening

    August 3, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    It’s time to get fancy with your flowers! To prepare for the fall exhibition, Flint Hills Masters, day campers will explore the art of gardening. Children will paint masterpieces using flowers, experience how to arrange a bouquet of flowers and explore landscape design. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled. Pick up for half-day registration is between 12:00 p.m. and 12:15 p.m., and pick up for full-day registration is between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Day registrants must bring their own sack lunch. Adventure Camp is limited to 24 students, grades K-2.

    Join the Flint Hills Discovery Center in searching for people and animals lurking about the Flint Hills in the “Hide and Go Camo” day camp. Children will learn different ways the military uses camouflage to hide their tools an* Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled.   4. Adventure Camp: Astronomical Adventure

    August 5, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Race to the stars! Children will embark on an adventure to explore the space above the Flint Hills, discover life without gravity and create a constellation key chain. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled. Pick up for half-day registration is between 12:00 p.m. and 12:15 p.m., and pick up for full-day registration is between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Day registrants must bring their own sack lunch.   5. Adventure Camp: Off to Oregon!

    August 6, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Come ride along and visit two historic sites in the Flint Hills. We will explore an Oregon Trail campsite at Alcove Spring and a historic Pony Express Station in Marysville. Children will test their trail knowledge and play an interactive quartermaster game and virtually experience ‘trail life’. Every day camper will also create an Oregon Trail board game to take home with them at the end of our tour. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year. The age of the child attending determines the camp location when offered at both sites. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each session in which they are enrolled.   6. Adventure Camp: Fire on the Prairie

    August 7, 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    Come join the FHDC to explore the role of fire in our lives! We will learn how fire was made by ancestral peoples and visit the Konza Prairie to see the effects of fire on the prairie ecosystem. Day campers will get to check out prescribed burning tools and compare and contrast the effects of fire on the Tallgrass Prairie. The class will use fire and heat for several projects including an afternoon snack and a special hot air balloon craft. * Adventure Camp is a unique program offered at both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo throughout the school year.   7. Share the Story

    August 7, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM @ Flint Hills Discovery Center

    The Ant and the Grasshopper by Rebecca & Ed Emberley This story follows an ant on his adventure to bring food back to his colony. Along the way, the ant encounters struggles and discovers friends who help him finish his adventure. After the story is read, children are invited to participate in the art project of the month, Color your own Ant Farm! Share the Story connects the youngest residents of the Flint Hills region to their homes and towns through storytelling that will develop a foundational appreciation for the rich culture. Pre-registration is not required.

  8. Fly-In and Stay Awhile at MHK

    Two events, one great town! Manhattan Regional Airport is excited to host two great events. Friday night, Aug. 7, we will host the FAA's pilot safety meeting in the terminal starting at 7 p.m. Saturday morning, Aug. 8, Heartland Aviation and Kansas Air Center welcomes the Girl Scouts and Team TNT-2015 Air Race Classic. The public is also welcome to attend. Static aircraft will be on display. The air traffic control tower will be offering tours. Airport administration will have the AC on with ice cold water. We even have block rooms at the Parkwood Inn and Suites.

  15. Primitive Skills Workshop I

    August 15, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ This field course is located off-site in the Flint Hills so come prepared to spend a day in the field.

    Participants will receive veteran instruction and obtain hands on experience with a variety of primitive technologies including fire, cordage, containers, tools and thermoregulation. Participants will develop an awareness of nature-based decision making and will be given ample opportunity to apply techniques during the course. This field course is located off-site in the Flint Hills so come prepared to spend a day in the field. Ages 16 and up; youth ages 12-15 may be accompanied by an adult. Class is limited to 12 participants. Instructor Daniel Schapaugh is an Education Specialist at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. In the last 20 years, he has taught a variety of outdoor skills workshops and credit courses through K-State Global Campus, KDWPT, BSA and UFM.
