The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter provides service to the City of Manhattan, Kansas. It is operated by the Animal Shelter Division, which is part of the City Manager Department.
The shelter is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and also on Sunday by appointment only. The shelter is closed on City holidays. The staff cleans, evaluates, vaccinates, and handles medical needs of the animals from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily. (Appointments may be made during this morning time frame ahead of time, but only if staff are available.)
Animal control officers respond to calls from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and they are on call for emergencies on evenings and weekends. They also assist in the shelter as needed.
The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter handles animals from the City of Manhattan and Riley County.
The cities of Leonardville, Ogden, Riley, Saint George and Wamego, as well as Pottawatomie County, have contracts to use the facility. The shelter does not provide services to Fort Riley or Junction City.
City of Manhattan animal control officers do not provide services outside the Manhattan city limits.
There is an $80 surrender fee per animal from all areas outside the City of Manhattan and unincorporated Riley County.
