Gary Fees, City Clerk

Gary started with the city in March 1999 in the City Manager’s Office. In November 2000, he was promoted to Communications Manager and in February 2001, was promoted to City Clerk/Communications Manager and currently serves as City Clerk. He oversees procedures and special requirements outlined in state statutes, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents to support the work of Manhattan’s governing body, the city commission. Prior to coming to Manhattan, Gary served as Marketing and Business Manager for Meredith Corporation, Better Homes and Gardens Features in Des Moines, Iowa. Before that, he held several positions during his tenure with the Omaha World-Herald Company, including Advertising Director at the Huron Plainsman, Huron, S.D., and Assistant Advertising Manager, Marketing Coordinator and Classified Advertising Manager during his tenure with the Kearney Hub, Kearney, Neb.


Gary is a member of the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas and past member of the board of directors serving two terms as well as a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. He served on the board of directors and past president of Riley County United Way, and a graduate of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program.


Gary earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he graduated with honors, and a master’s degree in personal financial planning from Kansas State University in 2018. He received his Certified Municipal Clerk designation in 2003 and earned his Master Municipal Clerk professional designation in 2008 from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Association.


Gary’s spouse, Bronwyn, is a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at Kansas State University. They have two grown sons.
