(Manhattan, Kan., May 2, 2018) — Airport events (5K and Fly In) set to “Take Flight” on May 5, 2018

Manhattan, KS: The Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK) will host the Girls on the Run Spring 5K event on Saturday, May 5 and expects to have approximately 800 participants, including runners, family and friends, volunteers and other community members.  “This is a great opportunity for us to partner with an organization that serves the region, the same people who fly MHK,” said Jesse R. Romo, Airport Director.

Girls on the Run of the Flint Hills is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K event.

In addition to the 5k event hosted at Manhattan Regional Airport participants will be introduced to aviation through a variety of hands on experiences.  On display at the airport will be snow removal equipment, the new Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) truck and airplanes!  “We invite the public to come out to the airport, learn about different airport functions and flight training opportunities,” said Romo.  In addition to craft activities there will be live music and food trucks.  Participation in the 5K event and the aviation festivities is open to the public.

The 5K will start near the terminal and go south on Skyway Dr. and along Wildcat Creek Dr. then back.  The aviation event will take place near the Old Stone Hangar just off of Airport Rd. For more information about the 5K event, visit www.gotrflinthills.org/5k.  For more information about the aviation event, contact Airport Administration at 785-587-4565 or email romo@cityofmhk.com.
