Bike Month in MHK

Posted on June 12, 2018 at 10:38 AM by Kristen Isch

(Manhattan, KS, April 24, 2018) - Activities for Manhattan's 2018 Bike Month celebration will begin May 1. Local volunteers and advocacy groups have been working alongside Manhattan City employees and local business owners to plan and coordinate all of the events for the 2018 festivities.

“Biking is a fun, healthy, and green way to save some cash and time, while connecting to your environment. Each year we celebrate bike month, we are trying to grow our bicycling community and raise awareness for all types of bicyclists,” said Jennifer Nielsen, Bike and Pedestrian Intern for the Community Development Department at the City of Manhattan.

Additional volunteers are welcome to attend planning meetings, participate in events, and everyone in the community is encouraged to bring friends and join in the fun.

“We’ve come a long way in a short time. Manhattan was named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Cyclists in 2012 and again in 2016. Silver is in sight, but to get there it will take citizen-driven change and community-supported investment in such an important and budding component of our city’s transportation system," said Ben Chmiel, Planner Community Development Department at the City of Manhattan.

This year, Manhattan’s celebration includes a Bike to Work Day, Trail Clean-up days, a Women’s ride, kid’s bike swap, as well as several safety and awareness events. Mayor Linda Morse will read the official Bike Month proclamation at the May 1st City Commission Meeting at City Hall starting at 7:00 p.m. to kick off the celebration.
