1. Where are the fire stations located in Manhattan?

2. What is the ISO rating in Manhattan?

The City of Manhattan has an ISO rating of 1, which helps establish appropriate fire insurance premiums.

3. How do I obtain a burn permit?

Burn permits are obtained from the Manhattan Fire Department administrative office located at 2000 Denison Ave. Burn permits are free of charge; however, there are strict regulations on burning in the city limits and procedures to be carried out when using burn permits. 4. Can I burn leaves or brush in my yard?

No. The City of Manhattan has an ordinance against residential open burning.  Outdoor recreational fires and portable fireplaces complying with the City of Manhattan Outdoor Fire Policy are allowed.

5. How many fire extinguishers should I have in an apartment house?

A fire extinguisher must be provided either in the hallways on each floor level of the building or in each apartment. The minimum size is a rating of 2A:10B:C.

6. How many fire extinguishers should I have in my business?

A fire extinguisher with a rating of 2A:10B:C or larger must be provided for each 3,000 square feet of floor area or portion thereof. There must be at least one fire extinguisher for each floor level. Fire extinguishers in businesses and apartments are required to be serviced by a licensed company annually.

7. Where do I get my fire extinguisher serviced?

As a public entity the Fire Department is unable to recommend one company over another. We suggest checking the section in the Yellow Pages business section under "Fire Extinguishers" for a listing of companies that provide the service. In certain circumstances, as in residential situations, where only a small number of fire extinguishers need to be kept at hand, it may be more cost effective to purchase new extinguishers from an area home improvement/hardware store.

8. What do I do after a fire has occurred?

You have just had a fire in your home or apartment. Things are a mess and you don't know where to start cleaning up and getting your life back to normal. Let the Fire Department help you. The Department has brochures with suggestions on what to do after a fire.

9. How does my club or organization arrange a tour of the fire station?

Tours of the Headquarters Fire Station may be scheduled by completing the request form here. Please keep in mind that the department has regular duties and training sessions, so the tours must be planned in advance and scheduled around the department staff schedules. To assist in scheduling, please have the following information available: date and time you would like to visit, number of persons expected to attend, age group of attendees, length of tour requested and any special requests.

10. How can I schedule a fire prevention presentation for my organization or group?

The Manhattan Fire Department offers fire prevention presentations on a variety of subjects. Programs can be customized to fit the needs of the specific organization. Please complete this form to request a presentation.

11. What is the Rescue Alert program?

In 1977, the Manhattan Fire Department developed the Rescue Alert program to assist both Fire Department personnel and the public in being aware of rescue situations that may involve unusual circumstances. An individual may require additional assistance in being rescued due to illness, temporary or permanent disability, injury, age or other factors. The use of medical aides such as oxygen may present a potential danger not normally encountered in the home. While the department places search and rescue as the major priority at all fire scenes, situations may be encountered where prior knowledge of problems or needs could speed the rescue effort. Rescue Alert is a voluntary program in which anyone can participate. Individuals, caregivers or guardians may contact the fire department and seek information for this program. 12. How often should I replace batteries in my smoke detectors?

You should replace the batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year. A good way to remember is to do this when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.

13. Where should I place my smoke detectors?

14. Does the Manhattan Fire Department offer CPR, AED or First Aid training?

The Manhattan Fire Department provides CPR classes for groups and the general public. Visit the CPR page to find more information.

15. Does the Fire Department fill swimming pools?

The Manhattan Fire Department does not fill pools nor does it have fire hose to loan out. We are unaware of any area businesses who rent fire hose. You may contact Customer Service at 785-587-2480 to inquire about renting a fire hydrant meter and the costs.

16. Who do I call if I'm planning to test fire alarms at my business?

17. How can I report fire hydrant problems?

If you notice a problem with a fire hydrant such as leaking, damage, or you know it to be non-operational, please contact City of Manhattan Customer Service at 785-587-2482 with the address of the hydrant.

18. My carbon monoxide detector is showing alarm, but I cannot see any problem. What should I do?

Call 9-1-1 to report carbon monoxide alarms. Leave the house until it has been checked for the presence of carbon monoxide. Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide is both colorless and odorless, making it impossible to detect with the senses. The Manhattan Fire Department is equipped with carbon monoxide meters and can check the home for the presence of carbon monoxide. Common sources of carbon monoxide include cars running in an attached garage, defective appliances and defective appliance vents.

19. Why does my smoke detector make a short chirping sound every few minutes?

Smoke detectors are designed to emit a "chirp" every few minutes when the battery is low. This is a warning the battery should be replaced immediately.
